The only 2.8 TD before the JTD common rail engine, was the 2.8 i.d.T.D, which is actually an Iveco (read Fiat) direct injection engine, 122 BHP. The 2.8 engine rated at 87 BHP is the non-turbo Fiat engine. The 2.8 i..d.T.D is the same engine as the JTD, but with mechanical injection.

Just a few thoughts on your problem, there is a known problem with the electrical connection for the No. 4 injector on 2.8JTD engines, the wiring being too short & causing a bad connection. There was a post on the forum earlier somewhere about a similar problem with the timing system which from memory turned out to be caused by too large a gap
