Free game sucks long-term. Not just the restrictions, but because core-Tyria is yawnsome. You just have Fractals, and since you'll be lacking all the buffs from expac#1's masteries, you'll be somewhat gimped there. Core game has no end-game. It was built on a pretend philosophy that players could go back and replay all the starter zones for fun.
Starting in Guild Wars 2 is very shiny, colorful and interesting, but if you are into progression you might be turned down. It is in many ways more moba-ish than mmorpg as progression towards gear is more for the looks than stats which i did not mind and unlocking stuff was fun anyhow.
For a while, yes. You can play a have fun doing the core game. But if you plan to stay you will need/want the DLC for the classes and content. My youngest child (19) picked upthe F2P for it after watching me for years of playing and she's having a total blast.

For example you will not be able to enter the Arena. I’m not going to go into detail on which specific things will be accessible and which are not because I’ll
It can be difficult to play Star Wars: The Old Republic without paying; the game has some pretty strict restrictions in place for free players and even formerly paying members. But the game’s next major patch is actually lightening up on those restrictions significantly. No longer will players have to suffer with a low credit cap, for example
